There wasn’t a track here that I didn’t like, but the tracks by Badflower, Crobot and Small Town Titans all really stood out for me.

I think I’d heard of the Oceanator release but certainly haven’t listened to it until now. It’s fantastic!

I guess my question is how does one define grunge or grunge-adjacent music? So much of the music of the last few years is reflective of bits and pieces of music from the last 30+ years. It all feels derivative in some way. Reddit is littered with threads about “what is grunge” but I’ve never really had a satisfactory answer.

Badflower and Highly suspect etc seem to be the best of the bunch, I guess all music (even the Beatles and Zepp) is derivative but if its great, than who cares haha...

Sure, I definitely don’t use the word derivative as an insult. It’s the nature of art and all things human to draw on what’s gone before. If I like something I’m not gonna be turned off because it might sound like something else.

I really think it was always just a visual aesthetic. Musically, those bands had little in common beyond some general West Coast punk influence

The fact that I’m looking at one list featuring Slow Pulp (one of my favourite albums from last year) and one featuring Been Stellar is a pretty big impetus to check out everything else. Thanks so much for providing a playlist - I’m on it!

There's no live show quite like a grunge show. I'm there.

I love this idea, and thanks to you both, I just discovered a lot of new music. I knew Bully and Slow Pulp but all the rest are new to me. Thanks, you guys!

Bully made my AOTY list last year; Slow Pulp just missed the cut. And I’ve really been digging Been Stellar this year. But everything else is new to me, really looking forward to digging in to this playlist!!

Bully and Slow Pulp are great! Loved seeing them on this list. Also, if you ever get the opportunity to see Highly Suspect in concert, go! A friend invited me and I knew nothing about them, I was blown away! Great guitar playing and live performance!

And here I was trying to get in on a garage rock revival revival... so close but so far. But seriously great news, love to help, have no idea where all the nirvana shirts kids congregate online, but I'm making them a lofi garage plague doctor graphic novel rock opera with love... https://open.substack.com/pub/snowhopebones/p/let-the-garage-rock-revival-revival?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android&r=4diwl5

Wait, I don’t think Hole was a Shoegaze band (see Slowdive etc). I also don’t think Hole belongs alongside the legendary bands you put them with…

There’s totally a 90s/grunge revival going on, and it’s apparent in the aesthetics of my kids’ teenage/college peers. They would have fit right into the 120 Minutes scene back in the day, except with iPhones and AirPod Maxes. Today it’s more like cybergrunge, if you will.

Also, great to see Hello Mary and Been Stellar up there. Both bands are great!
