Recently I stumbled onto another artist I remember having fond memories about and decided to find out there whereabouts…For those of you that remember “Beat so Lonely”, Charlie Sexton was the walking embodiment of a Prada ad with the voice of Billy Idol and the swagger of Elvis…
I can still remember this song coming out and getting excited about a burgeoning new pop star..Unfortunately the record kind of came and went with a few other minor hits but I always thought that Charlie needed to be embraced more-
The guy had it all, looks, the voice, the cool and the cred but we all the know the odds of making it in this crazy music world especially in rock..
Years later I wholeheartedly embraced the Arc Angels, one part soul ,one part southern rock, one part Stevie Ray Vaughn and their super solid debut album on Geffen..
Another band that still sounds great when I revisit it but again, Charlie didn’t really get the credit that he deserved in the music world and I still saw him as this unsung hero…
Fast forward the last 10 years, I’ve seen friends like Alison Mosshart of The Kills gush about Charlie…
Ive seen clips of him in Bob Dylan’s band and in Elvis Costello’s band- Charlie is like a fine wine, he gets better with age and he is fitting very well into the elderstatesmen of Rock that he is…
It got my thinking, is Ok to be the guy behind the scenes when you are so talented and have so much to offer? or did he get dealt a bad card as more should know about his talent and how many hold him in such high regards?..
There are lots of one hit wonders out there but Charlie isnt one of them…he is the real deal and if you dont believe me, spend a moment checking out his early solo work, his work with Arc Angels or even his contribution to some of the most iconic music artists in the world like Costello and Dylan..
Arc Angels played Seattle in '92, women kept climbing on stage trying to get close to Charlie. At one point one of them made it close enough to wrap arms around Charlie's waist while he was taking a lead, and she wouldn't let go. Security grabbed her, she's still holding on to Charlie, and they dragged him from one side of the stage to the other - he's just smiling a mile wide (he has that jaw) but he never missed a lick.
I liked him did not really get the credit he deserves. Very talented and nice to look at . My favorite song is Hold Me . A great love balot. He was in tge movie Thelma and Louise. He was the band playing in the bar that Thelma and Louise went to and that's where to story really starts. I have the movie soundtrack and Charlie has a few songs on there . Which I think are really good . I would give 2 thumbs up to Charlie Sexton
