My Top 5 New York City Bands Right Now
Stay tuned for our two-part NYC scene episode, dropping next month.
1. The Dare
Thanks to Charli XCX and Billie Eilish, The Dare is on his way to the top. He produced the viral hit “Guess,” and he made waves back in 2022 with “Girls,” which is my favorite track of his to date. The Dare is the first of hopefully many current NYC acts breaking into the mainstream. His music might remind you of early 2000’s LCD Soundsystem, and for good reason! The Dare seems to be this generation’s James Murphy and co.
2. The Thing
The Thing is not a band to miss. I met them at a gig they did at Silver Lining Lounge not long ago and have been doing a bit of work with them. Imagine the Arctic Monkeys meets a ‘70s Strokes. My pick to click of theirs is definitely “Country Song II.” Stay tuned for my interview with frontman Zane Acord and guitarist Jack Bradley in part one of our upcoming two-part NYC scene episode. Expect big things from The Thing.
3. Des Rocs
Dana White and Extreme’s Nuno Bettencourt are fans, the UFC uses his music, and he performed at my birthday party last month — the man Des Rocs is the third rocker on my list. You must listen to “I Am The Lightning” off his newest album, Dream Machine. He’s this generation’s Jack White, and he takes no prisoners the moment he hits the stage. Des is a star! Check out some of his tracks, and tell me you don’t agree.
Who are your favorite NYC rockers?
4. Geese
Influenced by the likes of Phish and Fleetwood Mac, Geese is NYC’s current favorite jam band. They released their sophomore album, 3D Country, last year, and I can’t stop listening to “I See Myself.” I’m a bit obsessed with the uniqueness and energy of this East Coast band.
5. Telescreens
Alongside The Thing, frontman Jackson Hamm of Telescreens will be featured in part two of our NYC scene episode. Telescreens’ sound is inspired by Brit rock, the ‘90s, and The Strokes. Listen to their track “Phone Booth,” and you will see what I see when you indulge in these new superstars.
