1. How Music Got Free
This week's deep dive is into filmmaker Alex Stapleton and writer Stephen Witt’s documentary about the world of Napster, Limewire, and the internet pirates who just about destroyed the music industry.
The new two-part docuseries How Music Got Free gives an inside look on how the rise of the file-sharing era rapidly and unprecedentedly changed the music industry in the late ‘90s and early 2000s. Featuring a range of interviewees from Steve Stoute and Eminem, to 50 Cent and producer Jimmy Iovine, the series revisits the story of CDs, and the people who stole and leaked them before their release dates, which is eventually what became the music file-sharing business that cost the music industry billions of dollars and changed its landscape forever.
